In our previous two articles, “Kickboxing Conditioning – Part 1 – Running” and “Kickboxing Conditioning – Part 2 – Boxing Bag” we delved into the demanding fitness and conditioning requirements for combat sports. Today, we will build upon this foundation by exploring the benefits of Medicine Ball workouts in our ongoing series of short articles, “News & Tips from the Coach”.

Medicine Ball Part 3

Kickboxing conditioning with a medicine ball is a versatile training method that leverages the power of medicine balls, typically ranging from 1Kg to 20Kg, to enhance a kickboxer’s physical attributes and performance. This dynamic approach often involves collaboration between the coach and the athlete, fostering an effective training partnership. For instance, a common exercise involves the coach standing before the athlete, who lies on the floor. The coach drops the medicine ball onto the athlete’s abdomen, and the athlete responds by absorbing the impact and then swiftly throwing it back to the coach, repeating the process. This exercise not only sharpens reflexes but also reinforces breathing techniques while simultaneously strengthening the core. A robust core is vital in kickboxing, as it enables fighters to absorb kicks and punches with reduced discomfort, ultimately amplifying their striking power and endurance in the ring.
